Immediate dentures are also known as same day dentures because they’re designed to replace your extracted teeth after surgery. Before your the teeth extraction, your denturist and dentist work closely together to create the right immediate dentures so they’re ready after surgery. Same day dentures are used during the healing process as your mouth adjusts to the changes inside and swollen gums subside. Your healing can take up to six months so it’s vital to get the right immediate dentures to help you during your recovery. In most cases, patients eventually replace their immediate dentures with permanent dentures.

As with any surgery, it’s important to plan ahead for your recovery. This includes ensuring you have all the information you need at hand to give you peace of mind while you manage post-surgical changes. Post Operative Instructions and Care

  1. 24 hours after extraction, remove and clean your dentures using a denture cleaner.
  2. Rinse your mouth out with a warm (salt water) solution to encourage healing.
  3. Expect swelling and discomfort to some extent.
  4. Take medication if any is prescribed to you.
  5. Eat a high calorie, soft diet with foods like soup and mashed potatoes.
  6. It normally takes 1-6 weeks for your extraction sites to heal sufficiently and allow the placement of a temporary liner called a “tissue conditioner.”
  7. Once the dental tissue has completely healed (which may take everywhere from six months to one year) only then should a permanent reline be done. Please remember, this service is not included in the cost of the denture.

Depending on your specific oral condition, a temporary denture could be fabricated for the healing stage of your treatment. In most cases, this followed by the eventual fabrication of your final denture.

How long do you keep immediate dentures in?

We recommend keeping immediate dentures in your mouth for the first 24-48 hours after your teeth are extracted. We’ll schedule a post-extraction appointment for you at Centre Street Denture Clinic. At your appointment, we’ll assess the fit, your bite, and remove the denture to check for healing and any denture sore spots. We also recommend you wear the dentures continuously for the first few weeks, but remove them for cleaning.

How much do same day dentures cost?

How long does it take to get immediate dentures?

The timeline of your immediate dentures depends on several factors. We coordinate your extractions with a dentist–a family dentist, one of our referral dentists, or an oral surgeon. Then, a few appointments are needed before extraction, Next, you’ll pick up your denture for the extraction appointment. Lastly, a few follow up appointments are booked to make sure the immediate denture fits well.

Can you eat with immediate dentures?

Yes, but it may feel awkward and uncomfortable at first as you adapt to the initial fit and function. At first, you may find it best to eat soft foods. As you progress, try cutting your food into smaller bites. This can help you get comfortable eating with your new denture. Eventually, you can start adding different foods to your diet. Please note you may still have trouble eating particularly sticky, hard, or chewy foods like marshmallows or taffy.

Can I get my teeth pulled and dentures all in the same day?

Usually, yes. In about 95% of cases when proper molds and jaw measurements can be taken, it’s possible to get same day dentures. This will also depend on your health history.
